Good afternoon world!
So I did my job as a citizen and I voted by mail. A lot of people I know, aren’t particularly excited to vote this year. Most feel as if the morals and qualities each candidate is professed to stand by are being lost amidst the circus that seems to be following them wherever they go. Another reason being is because until recently, minorities and especially a lot of my friends, feel as if there voice isn’t heard. Although I do agree that a lot of issues that the African-American community have to face are ignored, or put on the back burner, we should still celebrate one victory.
Back during slavery, in the U.S. a black man wasn’t even considered a human being. If you google 3/5 compromise this will show up;
“The Three-Fifths Compromise was a compromise between Southern and Northern states reached during the Philadelphia Convention of 1787 in which three-fifths of the enumerated population of slaves would be counted for representation purposes regarding both the distribution of taxes and the apportionment of the members of the United States House of Representatives. It was proposed by delegates James Wilson and Roger Sherman.”
Basically a lot of slaves made up most of the population of the new world, so politicians decided to count them apart of the population. I don’t know how most blacks feel but every time I read that definition it gets me so upset. It’s sad that we weren’t even considered human; just bodies to feel a census. Fast forward decades later, and many movements including civil rights and alliances with other sister suffragettes we are finally heard.
I hope that people, especially blacks, realize the significance of not only having a black president, but being able make our voices be heard. Please vote, not just because we have a black president; but to make sure your voice is heard.
